Meta ordered to pay $567m for child mental health harms — roughly 1% of annual profit, so expect a strongly worded appeal

A New Mexico court has ordered Meta to pay $567m into a fund for youth mental health treatment and prevention, adding to a $375m fine from a March jury verdict that found the company knowingly harmed children and concealed knowledge of child sexual exploitation on its platforms. The ruling also mandates platform changes including age-assurance improvements, school reporting portals, and informational banners about safety features. Meta, which earned approximately $60bn in 2025, plans to appeal. The case is the first to find Meta liable for platform harms and could set a precedent for similar lawsuits in other states.
