Big Tech agrees on something: a common plugin format for AI agents

Vercel announced Agent Plugins 1.0.0, an open, vendor-neutral standard for packaging AI agent Skills and MCP servers into distributable plugins. The format is intentionally minimal: a directory with a plugin.json manifest and fixed locations for components. A plugin packaged once works across ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and VS Code. The spec was collaboratively refined by AWS, Anysphere, GitHub, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Vercel, with governance handled publicly via a Technical Steering Committee.
