Big Tech agrees on one plugin format for AI agents, stunning literally everyone including themselves
Agent Plugins is a new open, vendor-neutral standard (v1.0.0) for packaging reusable AI agent components—specifically Agent Skills and MCP servers—into a portable plugin format. It addresses the current fragmentation where plugin authors must repackage the same components for each client. The specification defines a directory structure with a required manifest, optional skills, MCP server configs, and client-specific extension namespaces. Its Technical Steering Committee includes maintainers from Amazon, Cursor, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Vercel, and development is conducted publicly on GitHub.
